Applications and Experiments: ..
• Investigation of the deflection of an electron beam in a uniform magnetic field
• Closed circular path or spiral path
• Determination of the specific charge e/m of the electron

Product Information: ..
This complete experimental system is used to determine an electron's specific charge and investigate the deflection of electron beams in a uniform magnetic field...
The system comes complete with:..
- a fine-beam tube
- a pair of Helmholtz coils for generating a uniform magnetic field
- an operating unit for power supply..
The fine beam tube and the pair of Helmholtz coils are mounted on the operating unit, with the fine beam tube fully rotatable about its vertical axis. The tube and both coils are internally connected to the operating unit, eliminating the need for any external wiring. All supply voltages for the tube, as well as the current through the Helmholtz coils, are fully adjustable. The anode voltage and coil current are displayed digitally and can also be accessed as equivalent voltage values.

Inside the fine beam tube, a high-precision electron gun—comprising an indirectly heated oxide cathode, an aperture anode, and a Wehnelt cylinder—generates a sharply focused, well-defined electron beam. Impact ionization of neon atoms produces a bright, high-contrast fluorescent trace, allowing clear and precise visualization of the electron beam path inside the tube. With optimal alignment of the tube and precise adjustment of the current through the Helmholtz coils, the electron beam is deflected into a clearly defined circular path. The diameter of this circular trajectory can be easily determined when the electrons strike one of the equidistant measurement marks, causing the corresponding point to emit a clearly visible glow. The diameter, anode voltage, and magnetic field are the key parameters for determining the electron’s specific charge (e/m). The magnetic field strength can be accurately calculated from the coil current, as the geometry of the Helmholtz coil pair is fixed, ensuring precise and reproducible measurement results.
