Pohl Torsion Pendulum, 1002956 [U15040], Oscillations
Applications and Experiments: ..
The torsion pendulum is used to investigate free, forced, and chaotic oscillations with different damping levels. In particular, school students and college students study the following topics:
• free torsional oscillations with different damping levels (oscillation with weak damping, heavy damping, and critical damping)
• forced oscillations and their resonance curves with different damping levels
• phase shift between exciter and resonator at resonance
• chaotic rotational oscillations
• static determination of the torsional spring constant D
• dynamic determination of the moment of inertia J

Product Information: ..
The Pohl torsion pendulum consists of an oscillating system mounted on a wooden base plate and an electric motor. The oscillating system consists of a ball-bearing mounted copper wheel that is connected to the exciter mount via a helical spring, which provides the restoring torque.
The DC motor with coarsely and finely adjustable rotational speed is used to excite the torsion pendulum. Via an eccentric with a connecting rod, it periodically extends and compresses the helical spring, thereby setting the copper wheel into oscillation. An electromagnetic eddy current brake is used for damping. A scale ring with slots and a scale with 2 mm scale division surrounds the oscillating system. Pointers are located on the exciter and resonator.
