Objective: Chladni Figures – Making Sound Visible ..

Chladni figures are named after the German scientist Ernst Florens Friedrich Chladni (1756–1827). Chladni excited the natural oscillations of thin metal plates covered with sand by drawing a violin bow across them. The sand bounces away from the oscillating regions of the plate and accumulates at the nodes. This results in the formation of various patterns, known as Chladni figures, which depend on the frequency and the plate geometry.
For teachers, this experiment provides a vivid demonstration of mechanical wave phenomena in classroom instruction. For scientists and students in a university lab course, it offers a practical setup for investigating frequency, resonance, natural oscillation, node formation, and plate geometry.
In our experiment, the plates are excited by a vibration generator connected to a function generator. This enables fine adjustment of the frequencies and allows different Chladni figures to be generated reproducibly.
