The electron diffraction tube is a highly evacuated tube designed for demonstrating electron diffraction and the wave nature of electrons. It features an electron gun composed of a pure tungsten heater filament and a cylindrical anode, all enclosed within a transparent glass bulb. The electrons emitted by the directly heated cathode are confined to a narrow beam by a pinhole aperture and are then precisely focused using an electron-optical system.
The resulting monochromatic narrow beam passes through a nickel wire mesh positioned at the aperture of the electron gun. A thin layer of polycrystalline graphitized carbon is deposited on this mesh, acting similarly to a diffraction grating. This interaction produces a clear electron diffraction pattern, visible as two concentric rings on the fluorescent screen. A central spot, generated by the undeflected electron beam, remains visible at the center of the rings, enabling accurate observation and analysis.

A magnet is included in the scope of delivery, allowing precise adjustment of the electron beam path. This is particularly useful if the graphite target has minor imperfections caused during the manufacturing process or due to subsequent overheating, ensuring consistent experimental results and optimal alignment.
